We know how much of an inconvenience a clogged drain can be. Water pooling in your bathtub, sink, or any other drain can be frustrating. Standing water can lead to leaks and potential water damage. Here are a few easy tricks to try before calling your local plumber to solve the issue.
1. Baking Soda
Mix together baking soda and vinegar at a 1:1 ratio. Pour into the drain immediately as it will start fizzing as soon as the baking soda and vinegar mix. Let sit overnight, if possible or for a minimum of one hour. Flush with hot water and repeat as needed.
2. Boiling Water
Probably the easiest trick on this list, using boiling water to flush the drain can loosen clogs. Pour the boiling water in stages, allowing it to do its magic between each pour.
3. Snake
One of the most common methods of unclogging a drain is to use a drain snake. This is a fairly simple piece of equipment, essentially a flexible metal or plastic rod with hooks or a spiral on the end to grab clogs and remove them.
4. Dish Detergent
For clogged toilets, dish detergent can be a huge help. The soap will break down any greasy waste and loosen clogs. Flush with boiling water after pouring ¼ of a cup of the detergent into the bowl.
5. Clean the Pipe
Make sure to place a bucket beneath the U-pipe you will be loosening to catch any water or debris. Slowly loosen the slip nuts using a wrench and remove the pipe. Turn it upside down and empty the contents into the bucket. Rinse with hot water and replace.
