We don’t usually consider the fact that a machine meant to clean may get dirty itself, but it happens. You put your dishwasher through a lot! This machine has to be equipped to deal with food scraps, soap scum, mineral deposits and debris, etc. Cleaning your dishwasher regularly will improve the function and lifespan of your machine and the cleanliness of your dishes.

  1. Clean the outside of your dishwasher. Use cleaning materials suited to your dishwasher’s door material (ex. Stainless steel machines will need streak-free products)

  2. Remove and wash silverware compartments and dish racks.

  3. Remove any debris or staining from the bottom tub portion of your dishwasher.

  4. If spray arms can be removed (per your manufacturer’s instructions), soak them in a warm water and vinegar mixture to remove buildup. If not, use this mixture and a brush to scrub them.

  5. If your dishwasher has a food trap or filter, remove and clean these.

  6. If you notice any mold or mildew in your machine, use a very mild bleach mixture (1 tbsp of bleach per gallon of warm water) and scrub affected areas.

  7. Replace arms, racks and compartments.

  8. Fill a dishwasher safe cup or bowl on the top rack filled with white vinegar and run a full hot cycle.

  9. Allow the machine to cool slightly before opening and wiping any remaining dirt or grime from the inside.

  10. Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda over the bottom tub of the dishwasher and run another full cycle on hot.
