FREQUENTLY ASKED PLUMBING QUESTIONS

Your home’s plumbing tends to be out of sight which means it gets forgotten about most of the time until your faced with a problem- small or large. Of course, you need it fixed fast, and Prestige Plumbing’s emergency response team will be there for you. We strive to not only take care of our customers, but also educate them. Today we want to talk about some of the frequently asked questions we get.

Why do my pipes rattle and make noise?

Pipes that are unsecured can be rather noisy. As water flows through them they can move which causes them to bump against floorboards, and the interior parts of your walls., or even other pipes. Sometimes it can be a sign of water pressure that is set too high, and sometimes it just means the pipe has become unsecured. Fixing exposed pipes is a pretty easy task, but not so much for the hidden parts of your plumbing. If you can’t quite reach that noisy spot, don’t worry, we can handle it and get you back to peaceful pipes.

Why does my toilet continue to run?

Most of the time it’s a case of a stuck handle which leads to the flapper being left open. An open flapper will continue to fill the toilet bowl and use unnecessary water which can be a costly issue for you. A short term fix is lifting the lid to the tank and manually closing the flapper. Sometimes a quick jiggle of the handle can also take care of it. You should plan to tighten or oil the handle, and if it continues a replacement will need to be made.

Why is my faucet leaking?

A leaky faucet can be a pesky issue, the constant drip…drip..drip is a sound that nobody enjoys hearing. This is a pretty easy fix most of the time. Bad o-rings, a corroded gasket, or a broken valve are common culprits to your leak. Generally these parts can be changed out without the replacing the whole faucet. If the leak continues after checking these problem areas, there might be a larger issue at hand. Prestige Plumbing can diagnose, and solve the problem.

Why is my water bill going up?

This is never a good time for you as a homeowner. Leaks can waste a lot of water very quickly, and sometimes those leaks are good at hiding. Toilets are one of the most common homes for a silent leak. If you think you might have a leak, or even just want to triple check, try adding a few drops of food coloring to your toilet tank and don’t use it you check back. Wait about an hour, then look to see if there is any color in the toilet bowl water. If there is, you should call a plumber my friend, you’ve got a leak. Frequently checking pipes that are hidden by a cabinet is a good habit to catch issues early. Just looking to see if there is sign of where water could have dripped, pooled, or that is currently are giveaways to a problem.

How do I prevent my pipes from freezing?

Insulating your pipes is the best way to keep them safe in the winter months. If you have pipes that are hidden by cabinets, like for the kitchen sink, leaving the doors open can help since warm air can reach them easier. If you aren’t able to reach your pipes, leaving a slow drip overnight and keeping the water flowing should prevent freezing.
